AST Details & Logistics

Thank you for registering for an AST course with Elevation Guides! We’re looking forward to furthering your avalanche education and awareness so you can recreate more safely in the mountains.

Please review the below and complete where necessary so you’re prepared for your course, and Elevation Guides has your information.

Covid screening

All participants must complete the Alberta Health Services self-assessment the day before their course. If at anytime during the course a participant experiences any listed symptoms, they will not be permitted to continue. Review the Elevation Guides’ Covid policy here.

Equipment list

Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) is mandatory for all sessions: a minimum of a mask and hand sanitiser.

For the classroom day, no special equipment is necessary. We encourage a pen or pencil for notes. We’ll take a couple short pauses plus a 30-45 minute lunch break. Lunch and snacks are your responsibility. We may go outside to practice transceiver searching, therefore suitable clothing is required.

Field day: there is a plethora of material to cover on an AST course. We’ll spend approximately 50% of the day travelling, and the remainder stopped discussing concepts. Therefore you should bring warmer clothes than a typical day out in the mountains.

An AST course is not a “learn to backcountry ski course”. You should be familiar with your chosen mode of backcountry travel, e.g.: installing and removing climbing skins, switching binding modes, splitting and connecting splitboards, properly adjusted snowshoes etc.
